Faxing does indeed work on Asterisk with Digium (or any other hardware).
SpanDSP is the typical software solution for this. I use this solution
with a Digium PRI card and it works great.

However, my understanding is SpanDSP does not scale and can not receive
more than one or two faxes at a time. I have been told this but have not
tested it personally.
