Thats very much a false statement although most ata's wont work with faxing its definatly not near impossible.

I have some customers using Digium iaxy ata's with fax machines now for several months without issue.. sending and receiving. (faxmahine <=> iaxy.ata <=> internet <=> asterisk box <=> pri <=> pstn)

Thanks Phil.

That's pretty much the first bit of positive news I found on the
subject. There's alot of doom and gloom around faxing. Particularly
in articles discussing Hylafax, it seems to be taken for granted that
Asterisk sucks at fax.

Sending faxes over VoIP (for example, from a fax machine connected to an
ATA) with Asterisk in the middle is near impossible and certainly not
reliable.

The problem is Asterisk does not support T.38 (and many ATAs also do
not). However, the next version of Asterisk (1.4) will support T.38 for
the first time which should improve things significantly.

On the other hand, using Asterisk as an end-point connected directly to
the PSTN via some hardware (FXO or PRI card) works almost 100% reliably
with the more recent versions of SpanDSP.
