Thats very much a false statement although most ata's wont work with
faxing its definatly not near impossible.
I have some customers using Digium iaxy ata's with fax machines now
for several months without issue.. sending and receiving. (faxmahine
<=> iaxy.ata <=> internet <=> asterisk box <=> pri <=> pstn)

The problem is Asterisk does not support T.38 (and many ATAs also do
not). However, the next version of Asterisk (1.4) will support T.38 for
the first time which should improve things significantly.
On the other hand, using Asterisk as an end-point connected directly to
the PSTN via some hardware (FXO or PRI card) works almost 100% reliably
with the more recent versions of SpanDSP.
