"Asterisk" is pronounced as "Aster-ee-*_S_*k" as in "Aster-Risk"....
not "Aster-ee-Ks". This is analogous to the pronunciation of
"Nuclear". Its pronounced as "New-clear" and not "Nuke-Killer" as
Georgy Bushy himself pronounces. Not sure why the incorrect
pronunciation of "nuclear" and "asterisk" bugs me so much... but it
does!
There are two problems mixed in, you need to know which one is the
source of your struggle.
1) Which syllable is emphasized
2) -isk or -iks
The first one is benign, the second almost caused a lawsuit.
Bushies' problem is similarly doubled:
1) NU-clear vs nu-CLEAR
2) Nu-clear vs nuk-ular
Linux folks have had to deal with three pronounciations. Your torment
will subside.

Let's not forget "router", pronounced ROO-ter which has been recently
corrupted by some Californians (probably from San FranCISCO) to row-ter
