I have been running "naked dsl", getting internet service from scsinternet.com
and using Unlimitel for my DID for about three years now. I by far prefer
DSL, but that's probably because I know the guy who runs SCS Internet, and
know his backend setup, since I helped him bring his own LNS up and am
working with him in getting the peering agreements between his provider at
151 front and Magma, which is who Unlimitel uses. :-)

There is very little difference between cable and DSL; base your decision on
price, availability, support and of course, latency to your DID provider of
choice. I can't recommend Unlimitel enough. If your old number falls within
Unlimitel's on-net coverage, they can port the number for you.

I can't comment on ATAs, as I do not use them myself. I think you'll get
sufficient input from the others on this list, though.
