I have been running "naked dsl", getting internet service from scsinternet.com and using Unlimitel for my DID for about three years now. I by far prefer DSL, but that's probably because I know the guy who runs SCS Internet, and know his backend setup, since I helped him bring his own LNS up and am working with him in getting the peering agreements between his provider at 151 front and Magma, which is who Unlimitel uses. :-) There is very little difference between cable and DSL; base your decision on price, availability, support and of course, latency to your DID provider of choice. I can't recommend Unlimitel enough. If your old number falls within Unlimitel's on-net coverage, they can port the number for you. I can't comment on ATAs, as I do not use them myself. I think you'll get sufficient input from the others on this list, though. -A.
