You might prefer USB because it becomes it's own sound device. The problem with mic/spk is that it usurps your audio for everything. I want the "ring" and normal audio to use my PC/laptop as per normal.
I know it's not a handset, but I picked up a Logitech headset. The packaging billed it as USB but really its a standard headset with a USB->spk/mic adapter so if solves problem #1 (above) but you still get the flexibility of using it as a "standard" device if you choose. Good quality. Technically from what I understand they are pretty much just a sound card. The actual SIP or IAX stack is still implemented in a software application installed on the PC, so you're better off with just a good headset and a softphone like X-Lite.
