I have a hardware hack on the go where I created an interface box for an NT or similar handset to terminate on speaker and microphone plugs. The hard part is to find the mini handset jack to go in the box, although you can get one from a sacrificed or defunct handset. The conversion is basically wiring and works quite well. I would still be using them if I didn't have phones. I do use them for remote extensions from a PC. This is also great for media work, and you can also use a phone headset with a controller.

Don,

Not sure why you would want to consider a USB handset, all the ones I've tried are crap ( only 3 different ones so limited). Now I have noticed Polycom has a couple but it appears they are only for the Microsoft OCS platform.

If it is for road warriors, the only good solution is a good headset, and when I say good one that has it's own DSP soundcard ( we use the Plantronics DSP-400 or 300 ) , since a lot of laptop sound cards do not support full duplex. By using these headsets we've eliminated the soundcard variable which drove us nuts at first.

Do you know then what the best hand set would be that could hook up to
your mike and speaker port to your PC?

Personally, I wouldn't pay a dime for any USB phone. Technically from
what I understand they are pretty much just a sound card. The actual SIP or IAX

stack is still implemented in a software application installed on the
PC, so you're better off with just a good headset and a softphone like X-Lite.

I know that Aastra seems to be the best SIP Phone but who has the best
USB phone for PC and Laptops? It could be either SIP or IAX protocol?
