I'm not sure of the best way to keep the PC speakers working at the same
time as the headset but some softphone clients like X-Lite have the
option of ringing your PC speaker separately. This would probably work
best on a PC workstation. You could put a splitter jack on the sound
card's speaker jack and turn down/up the volume on the speakers as
required. Actually this is kind of neat because you then have the option
of a conferencing mode for callers. Microphone pickup is a issue of course.

You might prefer USB because it becomes it's own sound device. The problem
with mic/spk is that it usurps your audio for everything. I want the "ring"
and normal audio to use my PC/laptop as per normal.
I know it's not a handset, but I picked up a Logitech headset. The packaging
billed it as USB but really its a standard headset with a USB->spk/mic
adapter so if solves problem #1 (above) but you still get the flexibility of
using it as a "standard" device if you choose. Good quality. I'm pleased,
but they don't seem to have a model number for anyone who may have been
interested, sorry.

Do you know then what the best hand set would be that could hook up to
your mike and speaker port to your PC?

Personally, I wouldn't pay a dime for any USB phone. Technically from
what I
understand they are pretty much just a sound card. The actual SIP or IAX
stack is still implemented in a software application installed on the
PC, so
you're better off with just a good headset and a softphone like X-Lite.

I know that Aastra seems to be the best SIP Phone but who has the best
USB phone for PC and Laptops? It could be either SIP or IAX protocol?
