        I guess I wasn't very clear in my question.

        AFAIK, the packages Henry lists below are variants of asterisk with 
different GUI-based configuration methods. They do not offer any features that  
are not in the base asterisk system, only simplified configuration via a GUI. 
Please correct my understanding here, as appropriate.

        Rather, what I was asking was about analogous (perhaps rooted in  
asterisk inprevious incarnations, such as Call Weaver) open-source PBX systems 
with "better" or "different" capabilities from asterisk. I have no problem 
configuring with a Command Line (editing the config files manually). In fact, 
because of my personal circumstances, I cannot use a GUI, and prefer to 
understand/know-why things are done a certain way.

        So far, Simon's answer re  FreeSwitch for high-volume calls is the only 
response directly addressing my question.
