David, Remove the setting of PERSISTLOG. We've updated the init script after 0.6.2 was released. Before if PERSISTLOG was set to anything, it would log to CF. By default, in rc.conf it is not defined. This was one of many things that have been fixed since 0.6.2 was released. I'm (not so) patiently waiting for Asterisk 1.4.23 to go final. When that does, we're ready to cut 0.6.3.
