Tom, I would recommend to use the Mediatrix 1124 24 FXS ports gateway. With 3 of them, you should be able to use regular analog phones. They sell for about $1000 each on eBay or $1900 brand new. It is cheaper than replacing everything with IP Phones, but you don't get all the nice features from IP phones.
Not sure the Net 5501 can handle a full PRI-T1 card. You may need to look at some more powerful computer to handle this traffic. I would recommend the Sangoma card with the HW Echo Can. Sangoma also have analog and BRI cards. I'm not sure if you can mix PRI-T1 cards with BRI or analog cards on the same system. I'm trying to get the Sangoma A200 cards working on our AstLinux systems, but we didn't had any luck so far. The system with AstLinux detects the card properly, but we're unable to use the tools to configure it. Worst case scenario, you could also use an external T1 gateway. Mediatrix, Cisco and Quintum also have good PRI-T1 external gateways. If you use external gateways for both T1 trunks and FXS ports, you will need to make sure your AstLinux uses a more recent Kernel to provide the perfect timer interrupts at 1000Hz. We use kernel 2.6.26.8 and the timers are working perfectly. Cheers. Stephan Monette Unlimitel Inc.
