Again, a little late, but I've recently been looking long and hard at
these

for Asterisk. They're not /quite/ embedded systems, but with the
addition of an IDE to CF converter, the only other moving parts that I
can see in this machine are the power supply and CPU fan. Additionally,
the dual core 1.GHz processor would seem to be a /significant/
improvement over the 500MHz CPU in the ALIX and net5501 boxes. It's got
a PCI-E slot, and they seem to be a couple of hundred dollars (in
Australia, anyway) cheaper than an equivalent rackmount ALIX box.
