I have been easily able here in the states to put together 1u mini-itx
systems with 2 gigs of RAM and a Pentium-D (pseudo dual core) (NOT Celeron)
processer with a SATA to CF converter, for less than $300 (the cost of a
net5501 in a case qty 1).

However for me and often the customers, the draw of the net5501 is the
complete lack of moving parts..

I agree that nowadays fan technology has gotten to be where CPU fans fail
less and less (used to be one of our biggest field failures in rackmount
boxes was CPU fans)..

But still many people like the soekris in its nifty little case or in a tidy
little rackmount with extenders.

The soekris boxes easily handle about any amibient temperature we want to
give them.. an equipment room of 90-95 degrees doesn't hurt a soekris.
whereas a conventional server we note at that room temperature its fans will
be running a solid high speed... which will result in failure.

I like the Dynatron line of 1u CPU blowers, they seem to do a good job and
last a long time in the field.. but can be a bit pricey. again something
not needed with a soekris.

It would be neat if soekris would release a board on the later geode NX
platforms. however at this point I believe it would no longer be
fanless...unless an extra large heat sink could be incorporated into the
board.

Any feed back from the group on these boards? Do you think the 300Mhz would
be okay, or would I regret not going with the 1GHz? This is for a home
office type application with 3 extensions, IP only. Am I missing something
that would make these not happy to run Astlinux?

If no feedback on these I will probably go with another Alix.

Again, a little late, but I've recently been looking long and hard at these
<http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/5015/SYS-5015A-H.cfm?typ=H>
systems for Asterisk. They're not quite embedded systems, but with the
addition of an IDE to CF converter, the only other moving parts that I can
see in this machine are the power supply and CPU fan. Additionally, the
dual core 1.GHz processor would seem to be a significant improvement over
the 500MHz CPU in the ALIX and net5501 boxes. It's got a PCI-E slot, and
they seem to be a couple of hundred dollars (in Australia, anyway) cheaper
than an equivalent rackmount ALIX box.
