Unfortunately I think that is more a reflection of developer
free time than driver quality, but it is true that ath5k
works well for me at least.

FWIW right now I'm working on a particularly hard-to-trigger
race condition but after that there are more features and
bug fixes on the roadmap - AP mode PS fixes, WME, ANI.
