Actually critical care is protected by law here regardless of insurance, but you will get billed for it. Also, debt is gone after several years, and the collectors will try to make deals with you to pay less.
Of course, if you don't pay your credit will be hit hard depending on the amount, and that can be harmful later on, plus aftercare isn't covered, so lasting life long injury is probable to some degree.
Do remember the oft unmentioned Medicare enhancements, and the State Health Insurance Assistance Programs that combine Medicare and Medicaid to lower your premiums to almost nothing if you are under a certain financial bracket. Social security often covers your premiums if you have it as well...
The system should definitely be easier to understand, but it's not, quite, as bad as people believe.
