Some of my tracks and albums get some fairly substantial replay gain adjustments (around -11dB). This means that when I have replay gain enabled, particularly in smart mode, they end up sounding nowhere near as good as they normally do. I wonder if this is some of the reason for the complaints about lower audio quality with the recent sb firmwares. I can obviously crank up the volume level to make these tracks as loud as I'd like them (and Dean assures me that I'm unlikely to notice any difference in quality by doing this). However, it feels very wrong to have the dial on my amp turned up as much as this requires. Can anyone tell me what the pros and cons are of doing this? By turning my amp up, am I making it work harder? Does it use up more electricity? Does it run hotter? Does the sound get affected in any way other than volume?
ReplayGain is a great thing, but it seems that its biggest advantage (i.e. you don't need to keep reaching for the volume control), is also a disadvantage. I do wish there was a setting to only use ReplayGain when playing random tracks!
