Thanks everyone for your ideas and suggestions on how to get my vinyl
onto the PC.

I discovered that trying to do it straight into the sound card was
awful, the levels could not be lowered enough so it clipped.

My eventual solution was to first record the vinyl onto the hard disc
of my Panasonic DMR-E95H DVD Video Recorder. When I had around 6
albums recorded I burned them onto a DVD. The next trick was to get
the audio file our of the DVD format. There are a lot of programs that
claim to do this and I looked at a few. Some were really difficult to
operate, others would not install. Anyway I have settled on a program
called DVD Lite which rips the audio out of the vob file and converts
them into a number of formats including FLAC. It seems to have worked,
the sound quality is not like the vinyl but at least I will listening to
music more often.

Thanks again
