hmm, digital volume controls aren't necessarily evil. it depends on
their implimentation. most modern one that work with data paths greater
than 16 bits are able to attenuate the signal without degrading the
original, at least over part of their range. i use digital volume
control and the manufacturer states something like -40db of attenuation
before the signal is measurably degraded (original bits start to get
thrown away), note that's measurably, not audiably as at that much
attenuation other factors such as ambient noise cause more 'loss' to
the 'signal' than a few bits getting thrown away. also remember that
some of early cd players (which some luddites ;) describe as amongst
the best cd players ever) had only 14 bit dacs anyway. all in all the
best thing to do would be to see how it sounds in your system and if
you can try both analogue and digital volume controls.
also note that some power amps like to have their signals conditioned
by a preamp before they get them (most famouly naim nap series power
amps) so this may well be a factor if you prefer the sound of a pre to
direct connection.
