EAC reads and re-reads the CD, trying to get a result which is correct.
I assume it uses the intrinsic error correction built into the CD
format (CIRC) to determine when or if it gets a correct reading.  It
sounds like this vaunted "Memory Player" does much the same, except it
costs $10,000 (which compares somewhat unfavorably to $0 for EAC).

As I and others have mentioned, much of the time EAC gets a perfect
copy of a CD track (even on my rather poorly-taken-care-of and
scratched CD collection).  This can be verified beyond any doubt using
checksums plus the internet.

So most of the stuff on that Memory Player page is false advertising,
although you can see they've worded things somewhat cleverly to avoid
really saying anything.  My favorite line is this:

I'd love to know what percentage of the time listeners can distinguish
a $20 CD player from the master tape in the same test...
