I agree a pre-amp may be necessary, but the DAC's I have all put out signals of ~2 volts, which is plenty to clip the amps I have. I assumed the Transporter was similar, but that may be a bad assumption! I must admit, I haven't actually measured the output of my SB3, as I'm currently using it's digital output....
As for digital domain volume control, the transporter is helped by using a 24 bit dac on a 16 bit word, but I'd still prefer the volume control be done after the DAC. You're right though, it's not the only one to use this approach. and finally, sorry! I must have mis-read a comment about bnc reducing jitter. You are quite right that proper connections do help keep it clean, by reducing reflections caused by impedance miss matching etc, which is why the second mod to my SB3 will be a bnc on the digital output! (The first will be a new power supply because it's so trivial to do!). As for the original questions that launched this thread, 1. we know now that it's digital 2. you turn the volume to 100% or disable it through software. 3. no idea about the handles, but I guess you could remove them. (nice retro look though!) 4. no idea 5. I like the one on my SF Line 3 as well!
