I'd like to share some preliminary findings to see if someone else wan't
to give it a try and perhaps become as astonished as myself.

What I use:

An SB3
A TacT RCS 2.2x pre-amp and room correction unit
An Krell FPB200 power amp
Yamaha NS2000 speakers
A Yamaha surround processor for A/V use
Home made interconnects and speaker cables.

The SB3 is connected to the TacT via a coax SPDIF.

I have had the A/V processor hooked up to one of the TacT's analog
inputs most of the time.

Weeks ago I was experimenting with disabling analog out on the SB3 to
see if it affected digital sound quality. To verify that analog out was
turned off I connected the SB3's analog outputs to the TacT's analog
inputs, simultaneously with the digital. This didn't seem to affect the
digital input quality.

Recently I disconnected the A/V system, which uses very long
interconnects. I was astonished by the improvement in sound quality
from the SB3 (on digital input). In addition it surprised me as
previously disconnecting the A/V section had a more subtle influence.

Today I removed the analog interconnects between the SB3 and the TacT,
and lo and behold, sound quality on the digital input deteriated
massively! (To something which is more like I'm used to with 16/44
playback.) I put the non-used analog interconnects back, and sound
quality again improved.

My initial guess is that running multiple ground paths alters the
ground reference noise available at the SPDIF receiver and/or
transmitter. My two analog interconnects are home made, and use massive
ground conductors. My digital interconnect is a mid price commercial
cable.

If you use an SB3 with a TacT RCS you might want to try this unexpected
tweak!

It transformed my SB3-sound totally into something I used to only
relate to good LP playback. I'd be most interested to hear if anyone
else (presumably a TacT user) can reproduce this fenomenon.
