I agree that the spatial relationship between the listener and the
speakers is really important.  But my recent experience with the
Transporter has demonstrated to me very clearly that this is not
necessarily the most critical thing (unless, maybe, you are listening
in an anechoic chamber). 

In the real world, the size of the listening room, the relationships
between the dimensions of the walls and ceiling and floor of that room,
any irregularities (e.g. alcoves and windows), and all the things
covering this (curtains, carpets, furniture, or the lack of them, and
particularly how hard/soft the covering objects are) has a huge impact.
Also, the placement of the speakers -how far they are from the walls
and corners, is critical, as is how rigidly all of the components are
connnected to the floor.  

This can all sound like a lot of audiofile mumbo jumbo, but all I can
say to any doubters out there is just try these things and the truth
will be revealed. In fact, unless you have really  experimented with
the way your system is set up, try it anyway.  I think you will be
amazed.
