OK, I'll bite.

The flaw in this argument is that people don't necessarily want listen
to hifi at volume as loud as the original instruments. To point out an
extreme example: if I want to listen to a live recording of a rock
concert, do I need 50,000 watts of amp power in my home?

What I want is an enjoyable listening experience. I have gotten
incredibly satisfying reproduction (plenty loud for my purposes) from a
tube amp with all of 10 watts per channel, and the best sounding amp
that I have personally heard (a First Watt Aleph J) was solid state
with only 30 watts per channel. Quantity does not equal quality.
