I agree completely. Audio dealers are at least partly responsible. When
they demo, they like to crank it up to impress the customer, and it's
real easy for the customer to choose what sounds best that way. But
when the customer brings it home, he probably listens at 10 or 20 dB
lower volume most of the time.

When I was buying speakers about 12 years ago, I went out of my way to
demo them at my normal listening level, which resulted in a different
choice than the ones that sounded best at high volume. And when I
bought an integrated amp for a bedroom system about 20 years ago, I
went out of my way to find a unit that had variable loudness control to
sound decent at really really low volume, like you'd be listening at if
someone else were asleep in the next room. Still use those speakers
today in my primary system, and still use that amp today even though it
would never be satisfactory in my primary system.
