802.11b is a "half-duplex" protocol meaning it can send OR receive at a
certain bandwidth but not both at the same time. For the type of
application we are talking about here we are almost entirely using
downlink. The uplink is still required for small acknowledgements to
keep the traffic going but there will be virtually no data there.

One should divide the stated throughput of wireless products (802.11)
with two to get some real world figure. I guess we can blame the
marketing departments of the wireless vendors for this
misunderstanding. Who would buy a wireless router that is only capable
of 5.5Mbps when the other company is selling one that does twice that?
