Or alternatively, you could be listening to a well-recorded stereo
recording on good quality gear.

It's perfectly possible (and indeed, desirable) for a stereo pair of
speakers to project a sound stage that appears to be wider than the
distance between speakers.

Please read up on how stereophonic reproduction works.
