It shouldn't be a blow to your ego.  If you hadn't thought you heard a
difference at first you wouldn't be human.  And since you care enough
about sound to go to the trouble of doing this, you're an audiophile by
definition.  Much more so, in my opinion, than those that simply believe
what they're told.

By the way I wouldn't worry about the golden ear stuff.  I have  very
acute hearing at least for high frequencies, and yet I was unable to
clearly (if at all) distinguish between a very cheap consumer grade and
a quite expensive audiophile grade amplifier.  The reason is that there
are no audible differences, not that my hearing is bad.
