OK, I'll take a crack at this too since I consider myself a small 'a'
audiophile as well. A long time ago I wondered why hi-fi shops would
fire up speakers with the best and biggest amp in the room. So one day
a sales guy demo'd for me two beefy power amps - a Citation and I think
a Crown amp. It was subtle, but I did hear a difference.

Since then I've been able to hear differences sometimes but not always
with amplifiers. The differences can be readily apparent, they can be
subtle or they can be nonexistent to my ears. Speakers are another
matter entirely. Rarely do two sound the same.

Listening to the stock SB3 by itsel or into my AVR's DAC I hear subtle
differences. I could probably identify correctly most of the time
whether the source has been changed or not. However, I'm sure that
identifying which source is playing correctly 10 times out of 10 is
beyond me. Maybe if I have longer term exposure to both it would become
possible.

Part of the OP's issue may be that he just hooked one psu up that day
and didn't live with both for an extended time. Also, identifying
which source might be harder to do than identifying whether or not it
is the same as the previous source.
