Let me back up a bit: I DO enjoy the equipment! Indeed, my wife and most
people who know me think I'm an absolute obsessive/compulsive nut case
when it comes to a/v gear. And they're pretty much right. I rarely keep
any piece of equipment in my main rig more than a few years. It's just
that my indulgence is limited due to the three-strike rule: marriage,
mortgage and kids (3 of'em). Which is OK. But still, as much as I enjoy
the gear and upgrades and tweaks, it'd all be worthless without the
Music!

I find a lot of common ground in other's comments here. I too, have one
main a/v sytem whose performance is critical to my emotional and
physical well-being. I CAN NOT listen to crappy recordings on this
system without pain! Which maybe speaks more to the equipment
performance or lack there of than anything else. Elsewhere, ultimate
performance is not so critical. I never buy after-market car stereo,
except to replace the busted and the worn-out. Likewise with pc audio.
So far, what has come with my pc's has been good enough for my uses,
which is mostly to sample audio tracks on-line before ordering the CD
or downloading the single, and also for background music while doing
something else on the computer. I usually demote my older gear to
secondary systems throughout the house, where they suddenly, almost
magically become quite good enough for years and years after being
found unworthy of my main rig. I guess my main system is a bit of an
"audio temple" too. There is precious little passive listening done
there. The goal there is immersion and suspension of time and space.
Getting lost in the music, that's what that experience is all about.
Which brings us right back to the main thing; the reason for all the
fuss: the Music!
