// I work in networking.

Really? Me too.

// SRAMs are used extensively.

If by "extensively" you mean "in certain specialized applications, or
where tiny amounts of RAM are needed", then yes, I'd agree.

// .. buffer chip is a 128K x 8 (1Mbit) SRAM.

Do you realize that you are having this argument with the person who
designed the hardware in question? SLIMP3 (2001) used a PIC
microcontroller and had a very small amount of external memory which
was indeed SRAM. Squeezebox v1, also an 8-bit micro-controller
architecture, also used SRAM (256KB). As I said, you will find SRAM in
very small embedded systems. However, Squeezebox v2 (2005) and the
current model, v3, have 8 megabytes of SDRAM. If you don't believe me,
look inside.

// See
http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2003May/bch20030515020006.htmIn my
field, ECC has become a new requirement in the last 4 years because of
true issues and instabilitieds caused by occasional flipped bits. There
are enough IEEE articles on it to fill a bookshelf.

I thought SRAMs were used in your field?? In any case, I'm afraid you
still don't know what we're even talking about here! This would be a
good starting point if you care to learn:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_access_memory

// What I was asking is data on errors during transmission from audio
CD to computer.

I thought you were talking about flipped memory bits...

// Thanks for going on a tangent and telling me I am an ignorant sod.

I didn't say that, and my goal in the first place was not to offend.
However in this case I would not have been doing any of us a favor by
just entertaining your arguments. I didn't go there until you'd made it
clear that you weren't going to listen to what any of us had to say,
much less do your own homework with a quick google search. I hoped you
might snap out of it and realize that a few of us here actually know a
thing or two about audio. However, since you clearly already know
everything, I'll just go find a different thread do post my crazy ideas
in.
