Yes, but an external DAC may have HDCD on an application specific chip
that is more closely tied to DAC function, compared to a modern
receiver which has a bunch of DSP code inside a really big chip, all of
which feeds the same DAC.

Reading the AES paper, it did say any DAC can be used in decoding, so a
CD player that decodes HDCD and has digital out may be usable as well,
but most DAC only have digital in, not out.
