Ouch, that is a small budget. I think you should think again about 
powered speakers, they all are not terrible. Look in "Pro audio" stores, 
for something like the Mackie HR624 Studio Monitor

There are a fair number of decent unpowered speakers at the $500 a pair 
point, but you'll then need an amp, which will cost at least a couple 
hundred bucks.

You do not "need" a preamp, unless you want to switch between sources. 
If you are just going SqueezeBox to speakers, or SB to amp to speakers,
you can skip the preamp.

You are correct, audiophile stores want to sell you $500 cables to 
connect your $2000 amp to your $5,000 speakers.  A few of them realize 
that this is a drug, and if they get you in, you will return to buy more 
and more.
