I didn't mention the use of MLP on DVD-A discs, but you're right. The data can be stored directly as LPCM, or using MLP lossless compression. The Lossless compression is required for multi channel, high sample rate audio, to keep the data transfer rate within the DVD specs. If MLP is used, the data is uncompressed to LPCM for playback.
