I have less faith in human nature.  I wouldn't attribute this behavior
to naively thinking the best of modders, but rather to the old human
impulse to acquire status.  There's a market for luxury products (and
always has been) not so much because they're intrinsically better, but
rather because they're expensive - if you can afford them it's a symbol
of wealth and power.

In this case a simple $2000 Transporter isn't exclusive enough, so it
needs to be modified, and then the modifications need to be talked up
so as to maximize the benefit.
