For some reason, in relatively recent years, the idea that everything
must be modified to work best has become a popular one. Before that,
the popular idea was to buy the most expensive brand you could afford
(trusting the equipment manufacturer to select the best possible
components). Now the boutique component sellers have people buying the
most expensive brand of equipment they can afford, then buying the most
expensive boutique components they can afford to modify it.

Where is all this leading? To the death of high-end audio. People no
longer trust even high-end manufacturers to use the appropriate/best
parts. Snake-oil salesmen have eroded trust in trust even further,
after all, if some little block of wood placed strategically on the
corner of an amp can turn it from being just adequate to absolutely
mind-blowingly fantastic, what can the engineers possibly know about
making audio equipment? The result is that Joe 6-pack thinks high-end
is a complete scam and he goes back to Walmart or Radio Shack when he
needs a new stereo.

It's a shame people as so easily manipulated, but it is a result of
people wanting to think the best of others. They don't want to think
that the guy selling the $500 power cord is lying or even delusional.
They want to think that he is a honest person who knows what he is
talking about.

Finally, if you find the equipment "unexciting", "uninvolving", etc.,
it is probably because it is doing exactly what it is supposed to-
providing flat frequency response with little distortion. Most
equipment does these days, even the cheap stuff. Maybe you should try
listening to some other music.
