My Squeezebox is one of my favourite products I own, so I've thought
long and hard about this and have to disagree.

I hate to think whether I'd have the time for this if I wasn't in the
IT industry and know this sort of stuff inside out.

I'm thinking of my sister - incidently to whom I've mentioned that
Squeezeboxes are the best thing since sliced bread. If she didn't have
me to set it up for her, I hate to think how far she'd get (and she's
YOUNGER than me!).

For a start you don't get a CD with the Squeezebox. She'd have to
download the software first:

1: What does "Download" mean?
2: How do I "download"?
3: Am I running Windows Vista, Windows XP, Linux or MacOS?
4: Assuming I managed to download the file, where on my computer is
it?
5: How do I install it?
6: What next?

........and so it goes.....

So far, I haven't even touched on configuring Slimserver, ripping the
CD collection, setting up the SB hardware, connecting the hardware
together, configuring the wireless network, etc.

So no - you really do need some pretty decent knowledge to set one of
these up. Certainly a lot more than dropping a CD into a drawer and
hitting "Play". I guess we all take this knowledge for granted - but
not everyone has it. We are a select few.

I guess Slim Devices' next challenge is to make it that easy - I'm sure
they're trying, and one day they'll get there. Some things are already
in the pipeline such as running SlimServer on a ReadyNAS, etc. We've
got a long way to go though to make this sort of thing usable by
someone who only knows how to start up their computer and read their
email or the news.
