One thing to keep in mind is that SB's analog signal level is slightly
lower than most (I had a chance to compare) CD players, and that would
lead to the exact impressions you are having. Also, audio memory is
quite short for the type of comaprison you are trying to make.

In my experience (BT), SB analog out is quite good and it won't be
significantly improved with sub $1000 DAC. One thing to try in you 
case is to use DAC as a preamp and connect directly to the amp input of
your 640A, by-passing its internal preamp. I think you'd be pleasantly
surprised with the result.

The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will
improve. DVD performance will also increase substantially.
