Well, it's too bad that your $4000 DAC is sensitive to what's plugged
into it. 

The S/PDIF data output from the SB3 is provably identical to that from
your CD player playing the same material UNLESS the CD player is
upsampling or doing some other signal manipulation. 

The S/PDIF jitter/noise/whatever from the SB3 is decent but not
excellent. You can make it excellent by running it through something
like the Apogee Big Ben, which is what I do. But, the SB3 plus the Big
Ben basically costs as much as the Transporter.

Doing a 30-day free trial on the Transporter will tell you if it's the
S/PDIF leg that has the weakness.

Since you're an Apple guy, have you tried the Airport Express? That may
be all you need.
