So, to be perfectly clear: What audio format did you rip your files in? If it's not a lossless format that the Squeezebox supports natively (FLAC or WAV) then there's transcoding, which if it's not being done to another lossless format will degrade the sound quality, regardless of bitrate settings in the "Audio" configuration page of the player. (Transcoding to a lossless format from a lossless format, by definition, is lossless.) What you're describing sounds like much too significant an effect to be cabling differences.
