FWIW I am happy using the digital volume control on the SB3 and skipping the pre section of my integrated.
I know cliveb is into short signal paths and transparency and, in general, I agree. It always makes me think when I read about the mystical qualities of this or that high end preamp, when the best preamp in the world would sound simply like no preamp. What makes it all tick is increasing bit depth to 24 prior to the attenuation and, clearly, the 24 bit DAC. This means at reasonable volumes you retain the 16 bit resolution (no extra resolution is created of course).
