As an insurance policy during unexpected events, yes, that is something
they do. But it's not what they are "all about".

In a day-to-day listening situation, what attenuators are REALLY for is
to optimise the gain structure of the system so that you don't have to
use excessive digital attenuation at normal listening levels.

Regular readers of these forums will know that I am something of an
"evangelist" for ditching preamps and using the SB/TP digital volume
control. But I take that stance ONLY if you get the gain structure
correct.
