The sound of of the SB3 with an outboard DAC (Musical Fidelity XDAC & PSU) into Rogue Perseus Pre, Spectron musician 3 power and martin logan SL3 speakers is MUCH better than the stock SB3. Blind side by side comparisons of 2 transports to the SB3 produced no audible differences with two different listeners.
I haven't compared this set up to a transporter, but I would hazard a guess that if you choose the right DAC to partner with your SB3, it will sound as good or better than the Transporter. Sean Adams has many times made the point that digital out from an SB3 should be as good as any transport (and therefore presumably the digital out of the Transporter also). My $0.02.
