There are several advantages.

1) re: jitter it's best to have the data transmitted asynchronously,
stored in memory, and then clocked out to a local DAC with a local
oscillator.  That minimizes jitter at the DAC in the simplest and best
way possible.  A USB implementation may or may not be able to achieve
equivalent performance, but it cannot be better.

2) SB and TP can connect easily to internet radio and music streaming
services (such as slacker, which is great) with or without a server
present on the network.

3) multiple devices in different rooms can be easily synched to play in
unison.

4) the server can be in a closet, or the basement, or wherever.

5) SB and TP can connect to more than one server if there are several
on the same network.  That even works over the internet, although you
may have to use lossy compression if the connection isn't fast enough.
