Well following on from all your advice I thought I would give an update. I am no longer searching for floorstanders. New speakers are still an option, however.....
I pointed my speakers in much more so that they 'meet' in front of my listening position as I was finding I could actually hear more if I put my head directly between them. I also downloaded the Inguz plugin, and after a bit of a play today, I increased the 'width' setting using this plugin. Everything now sounds so much better, it put a smile back on my face and I could even hear small details that I could not before.
