Given the room I am not certain that floorstanders are going to fix the
problem.

You said you wanted more "separation" and the best way to do that is to
put your speakers in as much space as possible (side and rear). I
understand this isn't possible in your domestic reality. That doesn't
mean floorstanders are the right answer though :)

IME you are going to end up with a lot of bass/mid-bass and probably
need some EQ to balance it out (given the domestic situation). So not
only have you not fixed the first problem, you've got a new one.

Also, small monitors work better near field anyway thanks to the
drivers being generally closer to each other than in larger speakers.
If it turns out that new speakers can indeed help why not consider some
higher quality compact book shelf designs? So, I make merely a
proposal...

Sounds as if you have the speakers on stands? Just for a test, move
them out a few feet away from the front wall, sit between them and sit
a few feet away from rear wall (i.e. so you are also in space). Totally
impractical, and probably too near to the speakers, but tell us what you
hear, or not, with regard to your desired 'separation'...
