All the digital cable can do is make the SPDIF clock recovery harder/easier by accurately preserving (or not) the leading edges of the waveform and not letting reflections interfere with them...IMHO.
Not denying what you are hearing - but the sound quality differences you describe aren't normally the ones I'd associate with jitter... Have you got any of those freebie cables that come with the SB lying around?
