The best way to listen to a lot of kit is to check out some hi-fi shows. You don't want to buy purely off the basis of your listening there, but it will give you a reasonable idea of what stuff does. There's a lot of variety, and you could easily get something much better than your friends' Naim kit - but only if you spend some time looking!
