I for one disagree that a preamp necessarily affects sound negatively. I have listened to my system with and without the preamp, and prefer the sound (and convenience) of having the preamp in the reproduction chain. I see my future in powered speakers, with a DAC in front of them. I think that will be the evolutionary step that will make me contemplate a change to my current system, but it is probably still a few years away.
