I'm of the opinion that 'highest quality' MP3 VBR (the one averaging
about 256k) is so good that the degradation compared to 16/44 is
insignificant compared to other things especially the original
recording itself, speakers, room etc. I'm not saying it's inaudible but
I have heard highest rate VBR sound good enough to let me know I was
hearing a fabulous original recording - soundstage too - in my opinion.
So I'm not one to say don't consider playing such formats. FYI this was
on an SB3 which clearly was doing the job well.

However, my preference is to buy CDs and rip them losslessly because it
is cheap to do so, the CDs are compatible with other players including
my car, the CDs provide a last-ditch back-up and of course they are
better quality than MP3. The question is...why not?

If I were you I would stick with CD from now on but not throw away what
I've got, although not ideal it will do fine IMO.
