This is an argument that will never be won by either side. For my part, I've heard pretty great sounding set ups with cheap sources. (Maybe the point is that cheap does not mean poor...?)
Also for my part, when I walk into a room in a show and am blown away by the sound I don't rush over to look at the CD player. I credit the speakers and the room set up first. For me, that's intuitive, but each to their own.
