Before I bought my Squeezebox a year or so ago, I had been ripping music
to VBR MP3s.  I had a fair collection by then.  I still haven't got
round to ripping it all to FLAC now, so plenty of things I listen to
are MP3.

And my opinion is that MP3s do sound immeasurably better through decent
equipment, an external DAC, or whatever.  So a Transporter isn't a mad
purchase even if all your music is lossily compressed.  I'm not
recommending it (partly because I've never had a chance to hear the
Transporter, and it's so much pricier than the Classic), but it's not
stupid.

Being able to distinguish between MP3 and FLAC back to back is one
thing; being able to get the most out of either format is quite
another.
